Governor visits Dibrugarh;reviews Nagaghuli Ghat River Protection Project;

ABKK Kamrupa, Guwahati July 15: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, today visited the site of restoration of flood damages from Nagaghuli to Philonoguri of Oakland dyke popularly known as Nagaghuli Ghat project in Dibrugarh district. The Governor inspected the project and held discussion with the officials of the executing department that is Water Resources on various aspects relating to the structural safety, long-term sustainability and strengthening of the embankment and associated protection measures.

Centered around Nagaghuli and the adjoining Maijan wetlands in Dibrugarh, it may be noted that the project focuses on riverbank stabilization, anti-erosion mitigation, and ecological rejuvenation of the wetlands. The project has benefitted around 23 number of villages and two lakh people with more than 1050 hectare agricultural areas.

The Governor stated that following rapid Brahmaputra riverbank erosion, the project has been designed with an objective of providing emergency measures including deployment of geo-bags and porcupine structures to dissipate river energy and consequently safeguard communities and the local topography.

The Governor visiting the area shared his vision for the holistic development of the riverfront area by advocating large-scale plantation along the embankment. He also advocated creation of recreational and tourism facilities, and the development of the area as a vibrant public space without compromising on the safety aspect of the site. He emphasized that such initiatives would not only enhance the ecological value and aesthetic appeal of the riverbank but also create new livelihood and employment opportunities for local youth through tourism and allied activities.

Additional Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, Upper Assam Zone, Samiran Deka, and Pradip Das, Executive Engineer, Dibrugarh Water Resources Division briefed the Governor on the various components of the project.

Joint Secretary, Governor’s Secretariat Arindam Barua accompanied the Governor during the visit. DDC, Dibrugarh Nandita Baruah was also present.
